I grew up listening to Luo Ta-Yo's music. His debut was back in 1982. I was just 9 years old and was just about to set off for the States. And his 鹿港小鎮 was one of the last Chinese songs heard before going to the airport. It really stuck to my mind, and since then I've tried to get his music whenever possible.

Back until '91 Taiwan was still under Martial law. His music usually carries a political message and thus gained a following on college campuses. Nowadays with the rapid pace of liberalization he needs to shift his focus toward more mainstream material. But that also makes it harder to differentiate his work. As a result the cult following has been dwindling.

Personally I like his older material better. Perhaps it's due to sentimentality, but the fact is they were especially unique to the times. - Bo
